The Archaeology of Compassion - One of my specializations is writing about archaeology -- not too surprising in that I used to teach it. This article for the layman plumbs the depths of the timeline and asks whether human beings are naturally compassionate, or not. Published originally in The Humanist: A Magazine of Critical Inquiry and Social Concern, May/June 2003. This article has also been used in several teaching contexts (Looksmart.com and Anthropology Courses, as two examples).
Chumash Cemeteries - Yes, I used to publish in scholarly journals. But I'm a working writer now, not someone who wants tenure. Published in The Journal of California and Great Basin Archaeology.
Deeper than Skin - In a remote village in Thailand, Buddhist monks are putting a spiritual powder keg right under the epidermis. Published in Tricycle: The Buddhist Review.
Devil's Punchbowl - My review of a little known, not much visited, but fabulous hiking venue in Southern California was a fun departure for me. Published at Wildway.org -- this link takes you to their site.
Playboy.com - When Playboy asked me if I'd like to write something for them on tattoos, I just hoped my reply e-mail didn't sound too desparate and pleading. Caution: This link takes you to their web site -- it's classic Playboy.
Military Tattoos - The combination of history and tattoos is irresistible to me. Did you know that the first military man to write about tattoos was Julius Caeser? Published in American Legion magazine.
What Tattoos Mean (monthly column in Skin & Ink magazine) - Given free reign to discuss the fascinating history and modern culture of tattoo symbols and how they are used, this column is my necessity. Combine that with the artistry of tattoo Superstar Greg James, and I am somewhere up in the seventh heaven -- don't tell the Editor.

I totally recommend my ISP. They're so much better than Earthlink.
