With my completed proposal for a non-fiction book and a query letter in hand, I set out to find a literary agent. I went no further than the Writer’s Market, the gargantuan doorstop of a reference book for all things writerly. It even came with a CD so that I didn’t have to keep lifting it. Today, there’s even a web site. [...] Step 1 in getting a non-fiction book published is having an outstanding idea for a book. In fact, having many ideas is even better. I maintain a database where I file ideas, plans, and/or outlines as they occur. And while I think I’ve come up some good book ideas, they have not (yet) become books.
